Site Update Reports for the Year 2014
May 9, 2014
National Grid, under the supervision of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), is about to conduct two off-site Supplemental Remedial Investigations (SRI) directed by the NYSDEC to further define the impacts associated with the former Nassau Gas Works Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) that operated on a small portion of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Update Week Ending May 9, 2014
Current Activities: May 5 through May 9, 2014:
Future (two week forecast) activities:
Project Description
500 Kent Avenue Supplemental Remedial Investigation
The former Kent Generating Station site, owned by Con Edison, is located at 500 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, north of the former Nassau Gas Works MGP site (see map below). The objective of this SRI is to define the lateral extent of MGP-related tar impacts north of the former MGP site.
SRI activities include drilling soil borings, installing monitoring wells, and collecting subsurface soil and groundwater samples.
Wallabout Channel and Navy Yard Basin Supplemental Remedial Investigation
Wallabout Channel and the Navy Yard Basin are located to west and southwest, respectively, of the former Nassau Gas Works MGP site (see map below). The objective of this SRI is to refine the vertical and lateral extent of MGP-related tar impacts beneath the accumulated sediments within the Wallabout Channel, its associated barge basin, and the Navy Yard Basin. Borings will be installed from a floating barge to evaluate the physical presence of tar and to provide a better understanding of the nature and extent of tar-related impacts.
The findings of both SRIs will be presented in a SRI report following completion of field activities. The SRI findings will be used to refine the potential remedial alternatives.
